This is a great news article, that had passed me by previously. I think the desire for body modification in extreme forms is really interesting. There’s a good quote from Elizabeth Grosz on this – she says:
“The body is a point from which to re-think the opposition between the inside and the outside, the public and the private, the self and other, and all the other binary pairs associated with mind/body opposition.” (1995, ‘Volatile Bodies’)
It would be interesting perhaps to actually try to answer the question posed in the article (‘why would anybody want an eyeball tattoo?’) in the light of the reading and watching we’ve been doing this week and the mind/body opposition raised by Grosz.
It’d be great to see a blog post on this – or other thinking that’s emerged from you this week : )
Hi Sian, Thanks for the insights
I’m working on my post as you have got me thinking a little more here (still ‘perking’ as somebody said recently), these thoughts reflect on the artefact task also.
Looking forward to seeing it Miles
